The History of Groomsmen

What are the duties expected of a groomsman? 

During the ceremony, groomsmen are expected to keep things running smoothly without having to disturb the groom. They represent him to all other groups during the event, allowing him to have all the time he needs. In some cases, depending on preferences, groomsmen might have to prepare for a toast. This is not necessary, and it is at the discretion of the couple. In a lot of cases, only the chief Groomsman get to make a speech and give a toast. 

Most couples like keeping the numbers of both the groomsmen and the bridesmaid equal, again, this is not a rule; it is just for the sake of uniformity. If you get picked as a groomsman, you should consider it an honor, and you should do your best to support the couple. It is the reason why they consider you worthy of the honor.
